Why Every Filipino Needs Life Insurance (Even If You're Young)
Only 1.89% of Filipinos have life insurance. Here's the honest case for why protection should come before investing — and how little it actually costs.
Here's a statistic that should stop you in your tracks: only about 1.89% of Filipinos own life insurance. Not 19%. Under two percent.
That gap is exactly why so many families end up holding paluwagan and GoFundMe drives when a breadwinner passes. It doesn't have to be that way.
Protection comes before investing
I know — investing is more exciting. Watching a fund grow feels productive. But think of it this way: investing is building the house, and insurance is the foundation. If something happens to your income before the house is finished, the whole thing collapses.
A good plan, in order:
- Emergency fund — 3–6 months of expenses in cash
- Protection — life and health coverage sized to your responsibilities
- Investing — growing your wealth once the base is secure
"But I'm young and healthy"
That's exactly when insurance is cheapest. Premiums are based largely on age and health. The 25-year-old pays a fraction of what the 45-year-old pays for the same coverage — and locks in that rate.
Waiting doesn't save you money. It costs you money.
How much does it actually cost?
Less than you think. For many young professionals, meaningful coverage starts at the price of a few cups of coffee a week. The real question isn't "Can I afford it?" — it's "Can my family afford it if I don't?"
The best time to get insured was when you were younger. The second best time is today.
What about VUL?
A Variable Universal Life (VUL) plan combines protection with an investment component. It's popular here for good reason — one plan, two jobs. But it's not automatically right for everyone. Sometimes term insurance plus a separate investment is the smarter fit. That's a conversation worth having with an advisor who'll be honest with you.
